How to plan a travel budget

A useful travel budget is more than one total number. Separating transport, accommodation, food, activities and unexpected costs helps you understand what you can safely spend throughout the trip.

💡 With BudTrip, you can set a trip budget, record expenses and monitor the amount remaining from one place. Explore BudTrip

Set your maximum spending limit

Choose an amount that will not interfere with rent, bills and other obligations after you return. Treat this as the upper limit for the entire trip.

List fixed costs first

Add flights, accommodation, visas, insurance and pre-booked transfers. Subtracting these fixed costs from the total shows how much remains for day-to-day spending.

Create a daily target

Divide the flexible part of your budget by the number of travel days. Use the result as a guide rather than a rigid limit, because some days will naturally cost more than others.

Keep an emergency buffer

Set aside part of the budget for schedule changes, baggage fees, medical needs or an unplanned activity. Avoid treating this amount as normal spending money.

Record expenses in the correct currency

When travelling abroad, save an expense in the currency in which it occurred and check the converted value. This makes comparisons more accurate.

Note: Your bank or card provider may use a different exchange rate and may add fees.

Review the budget during the trip

Record purchases when they happen or at the end of each day. Regular tracking lets you adjust later plans before a small overspend becomes a large one.
