Flights and hotels are only part of the true cost of a trip. Local transport, meals, baggage fees, taxes and currency conversion can add up quickly.
Add every transport cost
Include flights or trains, airport transfers, public transport, taxis, car rental, fuel, tolls and parking. Check whether baggage or seat selection is charged separately.
Check the full accommodation price
Look for city taxes, cleaning fees, deposits, breakfast and early check-in charges. Currency changes may also affect the final amount.
Estimate daily food spending
Plan for breakfast, lunch, dinner, drinks and snacks. A kitchen or included breakfast can significantly reduce the daily average.
Include activities and practical costs
Add museum tickets, tours, events, visas, insurance and mobile data. Keep shopping separate so it does not reduce money needed for essentials.
Account for exchange and bank fees
Card issuers may apply their own rate and foreign transaction fee. ATM withdrawals can include both local and bank charges.
Calculate the total
A practical formula is:
Total travel cost = Fixed costs + Daily costs + Shopping allowance + Emergency buffer
Compare estimates with real spending
Record each expense during the trip. When one category is above plan, reduce another category to protect the total budget.
